Achong/Roldan Jump to No. 17 in Doubles Rankings

CORAL GABLES, Fla. Freshman Daevenia Achong and senior Daniella Roldan of the University of Miami women’s tennis team ascended to No. 17 in the Oracle/ITA doubles rankings, as announced Tuesday afternoon.

The No. 17 position is the highest for a Miami duo since Stephanie Wagner and Wendy Zhang capped the 2016 season at eighth nationally.

Achong and Roldan’s 17-spot rise is tied for the fifth-highest of any top-50 duo and tied for second-best of any pair that was also ranked in the last release. The teammates logged a pair of top-40 wins over the weekend, including defeating then-fourth-ranked Fernanda Navarro and Marie-Alexandre Leduc of Clemson.

Along with holding a top-20 spot alongside Roldan, Achong checks in at No. 67 on the doubles list with junior Estela Perez-Somarriba.

The reigning ACC Player of the Year, Perez-Somarriba is second in the country in singles for the third consecutive release. The Madrid native is 17-3 this spring, including 16-1 in dual matches, and has six top-60 triumphs.

In the team rankings, Miami moved up two spots to No. 27 overall after defeating Clemson and then-No. 14 Wake Forest by 6-1 margins at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

The Hurricanes are one of 11 ACC teams in the national rankings, eight of which are in the top 30. Miami is joined by second-ranked North Carolina, fourth-ranked Duke, No. 10 NC State, No. 13 Florida State, No. 20 Virginia, No. 22 Wake Forest, No. 30 Syracuse, No. 34 Georgia Tech, No. 41 Boston College and No. 50 Notre Dame.

Miami will be back in action Friday at 2 p.m. in Chestnut Hill, Mass., where it squares off with No. 41 Boston College.
