W. Tennis to Host Clemson, No. 14 Wake Forest

CORAL GABLES, Fla. The University of Miami women’s tennis team returns to action at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center this weekend.

No. 29 Miami (11-5, 4-4 ACC) begins play Friday at 1 p.m. against Clemson and then welcomes No. 14 Wake Forest to town for a Sunday matchup at noon.

The contest versus the Tigers will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra HERE, while the one against the Demon Deacons can be found HERE. Live stats for both outings will be accessible HERE.

The first 50 fans in attendance Friday will receive a free Miami tennis t-shirt, while the first 20 in attendance Sunday will get a free Miami yoga mat and yoga session.

Miami features one nationally-ranked singles player in junior Estela Perez-Somarriba, who places second on the Oracle/ITA list. The Madrid native picked up the 100th singles win of her career Sunday at top-ranked North Carolina with a straight-set decision over fifth-ranked Makenna Jones.

In doubles, the Hurricanes are one of eight teams in the country with at least three ranked duos. Freshman Daevenia Achong and senior Daniella Roldan lead the way at No. 34, while Achong also comes in at No. 43 with Perez-Somarriba. In addition, Roldan holds the No. 72 spot with sophomore Ulyana Shirokova.

The Hurricanes own a 30-4 all-time record against Clemson, including a 14-2 ledger at home. Miami has won 18 consecutive matches against the Tigers, including 17 in a row under head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews. In the most recent meeting, the Hurricanes notched a 4-3 road result on March 4, 2018.

Clemson enters the weekend at 8-10 (2-6 ACC) on the season, but has won its last two matches. The Tigers have one ranked singles player in Marie-Alexandre Leduc at No. 125 nationally.

Meanwhile, in doubles, Leduc is part of the team’s lone ranked pair, as she comes in at fourth overall alongside Fernanda Navarro.

Miami is 20-1 all-time versus Wake Forest, including 10-1 at home. The Hurricanes have won 16 straight matchups, all under Yaroshuk-Tews’ guidance, and have not fallen to the Demon Deacons since March 10, 1994.

Most recently, the Hurricanes recorded a 4-3 road victory over Wake Forest on March 31, 2018, the first time in the NCAA best-of-seven format—dating back to 2001—they won a match after dropping the opening three points.

The Demon Deacons sport one ranked singles player, with Emma Davis holding the No. 32 position nationally. In doubles, they also take one spot in the rankings, as Davis and Chandler Carter check in at No. 28.

After playing the Tigers and Demon Deacons, Miami heads to Chestnut Hill, Mass., for an April 5 matchup against Boston College at 2 p.m.
