Perez-Somarriba Holds Steady at Second Nationally
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – For the second release in a row, Estela Perez-Somarriba of the University of Miami women’s tennis team is second in the country in the Oracle/ITA singles rankings, as announced Tuesday afternoon.
The junior matched her career-best ranking she set March 4 and is again the highest-ranked Hurricane since Audra Cohen capped the 2007 season atop the list.
Perez-Somarriba is 14-2 this spring with seven ranked victories, including three against top-30 opponents.
Miami once again has a trio of ranked doubles pairs, one of just eight schools in the nation with at least three, alongside California, Duke, Oklahoma State, Stanford, Texas A&M, UCLA and Vanderbilt.
Freshman Daevenia Achong and senior Daniella Roldan lead the way for the Hurricanes at a season-best No. 34 position, jumping 10 spots.
Achong also pairs with Perez-Somarriba at No. 43 on the doubles list, while Roldan teams up with sophomore Ulyana Shirokova to form the No. 72 duo.
The Hurricanes ascended two spots in the team rankings and now hold the No. 25 spot in the country.
Miami is one of 10 ACC schools in the rankings, seven of which are in the top 25. The Hurricanes are joined by top-ranked North Carolina, third-ranked Duke, No. 12 NC State, No. 15 Florida State, No. 17 Wake Forest, No. 22 Virginia, No. 32 Syracuse, No. 37 Georgia Tech and No. 40 Notre Dame.
The Hurricanes will resume play Friday at 3 p.m., when they square off with No. 12 NC State in Raleigh, N.C.
