Men’s Tennis Sweeps ACC Weekly Honors
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Following its first shutout victory over Florida State since 2006, the University of Miami men’s team swept ACC weekly accolades, as announced Tuesday afternoon by the conference office.
A trio of sophomores were honored by the conference, as Bojan Jankulovski has been tabbed ACC Player of the Week and Adria Soriano Barrera and Tatsuki Shimamoto have been recognized as the conference’s Doubles Team of the Week.
Jankulovski’s achievement marks the third time this season a Hurricane received Player of the Week honors, as Soriano Barrera garnered the achievement on Jan. 22 and freshman Francisco Bastias picked up the award on Feb. 26. This is the first time three different Canes have been announced weekly winners in a season, since Miami joined the ACC prior to the 2004-05 campaign.
Playing No. 4 singles, Jankulovski, No. 71 in the Oracle/ITA national singles rankings, found himself facing a 3-5 deficit in the opening set against Juan Martin Jalif. The sophomore rebounded winning four consecutive games to claim the set, 7-5. Trailing 3-4 in the second set, the Skopje, Macedonia, native picked up three straight games to clinch the victory for the Hurricanes, 7-5, 6-4.
Meanwhile, Soriano Barrera and Shimamoto earned the program’s second doubles team honor in as many seasons, while securing their first as a tandem. Last season, Soriano Barrera teamed up with Christian Langmo to secure the award on March 20, 2018.
Competing on court 1, Shimamoto and Soriano Barrera were the first Hurricane duo to pick up a doubles victory on Sunday night, topping Sebastian Arcila and Alex Knaff, 6-3. All tied at 3-3, the pair won the final three games to jumpstart the Canes’ dominating night against No. 37 FSU.
