Marzal Named ACC Freshman of the Week
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – For the third time in four weeks, a University of Miami women’s tennis player is the ACC Freshman of the Week.
Lucia Marzal garnered the distinction this time, as announced Wednesday afternoon by the conference. She follows Daevenia Achong, who was recognized both Jan. 22 and Jan. 29.
Marzal, who shared the honor with NC State’s Alana Smith, helped then-No. 17 Miami (6-1) to a 4-0 victory over then-No. 20 Texas Tech Sunday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
The Valencia, Spain, native first teamed with senior Ana Madcur to secure the opening win in doubles play, a 6-4 decision over Francesca Sella and Anto Stoica.
Marzal then rebounded from not winning a game in the first set of her singles match to clinch the victory for Miami. She stormed back to take a 0-6, 6-4, 6-3 win against Stoica and handed Miami its second top-25 triumph of the young season.
The Hurricanes resume play Saturday at noon in Tallahassee, Fla., where they face No. 20 Florida State to begin ACC action.
