Miami Continues to Roll on Day Two in Coral Gables

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team posted a 5-2 mark in official matches on the second day of the Miami Fall Invite.
The Hurricanes went 4-1 in singles Saturday at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center, sending two players into the semifinals of each main draw.
“All in all, the team looked solid today. I’m excited to see another day of tennis tomorrow,” Miami associate head coach Laura Vallverdu said. “I’m happy to see the team doing it on their own and seeing a difference in how they feel. Composed choices and managing situations are what I like to see at any point in a match. Nothing is a big deal if you don’t make it one. They are all doing a slightly better job at understanding that and committing to it.”
Junior Yuna Ito and sophomore Ulyana Shirokova logged Miami’s first victory of the day, downing Michigan’s Alyvia Jones and Brienne Minor, 6-2, to reach the A Main Draw championship.
In the B Main Draw semifinals, freshman Lucia Marzal Martinez and senior Daniella Roldan dropped a close decision to Michigan’s Anca Craciun and Bella Lorenzini, 6-7 (3-7). It marked the first defeat of the weekend for the Hurricanes after Miami went undefeated in official matches Friday.
Additionally, in the B Consolation Draw semifinals, senior Ana Madcur and her teammate from Michigan, Lanie Van Linge, fell in the closest of fashions to Pittsburgh’s Mariona Perez Noguera, 6-7 (6-8).
Shirokova registered the Hurricanes’ first singles win, making quick work of Pittsburgh’s Claudia Bartolome, 6-2, 6-3, in the A Main Draw quarterfinals.
Ito advanced to the B Main Draw semifinals by topping Michigan’s Anca Craciun, 6-4, 6-3. The Kanagawa, Japan, native won six of the last seven games after opening the second set in a 0-2 hole.
Marzal Martinez came up short in her matchup with No. 62 McCartney Kessler of Florida, dropping a 1-6, 4-6 decision in the A Main Draw quarterfinals.
Roldan returned Miami back to its winning ways with a hard-fought, stellar win over Florida’s Victoria Emma to earn a spot alongside Shirokova in the A Main Draw semifinals.
The Hurricanes’ final match to conclude was one of the most exciting of the day, as Madcur won a 20-point second-set tiebreaker, staving off three set points, to take the match. The San Juan, Argentina, native knocked off No. 68 Tsveta Dimitrova of Florida, 6-2, 7-6 (11-9), to reach the B Main Draw semifinals.
“I am happy one of our seniors, Ana Madcur, out there finishing matches and continuing to believe in what we are preaching to her off the court,” Vallverdu said. “Consistent belief in that process is key for her.”
Sunday, Ito and Shirokva take on Ole Miss’ No. 49-ranked duo Tea Jandric and Sabina Machalova in the A Main Draw championship.
Marzal Martinez and Roldan are set to face Florida’s Katie Kubicz and Marlee Zein in the B Main Draw third-place match, while Madcur and Van Linge are paired with Pittsburgh’s Claudia Bartolome and Clara Lucas in a B Consolation back draw match.
In the A Main Draw semifinals, Roldan will face No. 119 Minor, the 2016 NCAA Singles Championship victor, while Shirokova meets Kessler. Meanwhile, Marzal Martinez will play Emma in an A Main Draw consolation match. Madcur will not compete in doubles on the final day.
Action is set to start at 9 a.m., with doubles competition and singles will follow after that, with an earliest start time of 10 a.m.
