Women’s Tennis Sets 2019 Spring Slate
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami head women’s tennis coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews released Monday the team’s schedule for the upcoming 2019 spring season.
Of Miami’s 21 guaranteed dual matches, 16 are against teams that were ranked to cap 2018, including 12 against top-40 teams that reached the NCAA Team Championship. Eight come against top-25 teams, with three versus top-six foes.
Miami, which ended the 2018 campaign ranked No. 17, will play either five or six teams that reached last year’s Sweet 16, including two that made the Final Four. In addition, the Hurricanes will host three top-30 teams, one of which made the national title match last year, Jan. 11-13 in the Miami Spring Invite to start the year.
“We’re looking forward to a competitive season,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. “As always, our schedule is one of the toughest in the country and will it prepare us to peak in May.”
Joining the Hurricanes in the aforementioned Miami Spring Invite are Vanderbilt, Northwestern and Kentucky. That trio finished the 2018 season ranked second, No. 15 and No. 26 in the country, with the Commodores reaching the national championship.
Miami opens dual match action with a road outing against Florida Atlantic (Jan. 18, 11 a.m.). The Hurricanes then head to Fort Myers, Fla., for a doubleheader on Jan. 20, first facing Cornell (9 a.m.) and then FGCU (3 p.m.) on its home court.
Next up for the Hurricanes is a visit to Evanston, Ill., for ITA Kick-Off Weekend. They first meet Tulsa (Jan. 26, 3 p.m. ET) and then face either Northwestern or UCF the following day. The team that finishes 2-0 advances to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, held Feb. 8-11 in Seattle. The Golden Hurricane finished No. 19 last season, while the Knights placed No. 22.
Miami’s first home dual match is against a Baylor (Feb. 1, 1 p.m.) team that ended the 2018 campaign ranked No. 25. The Hurricanes then open ACC play with a rivalry showdown at Florida State (Feb. 16, noon). The Seminoles ranked No. 16 in the final poll of the 2018 season after a run to the NCAA Elite Eight.
Yaroshuk-Tews’ team begins its ACC home slate with a matchup against a Duke (Feb. 24, 2 p.m.) team that finished fourth and made the NCAA Final Four last year.
After that, Miami hits the road to play Pittsburgh (March 1, 1 p.m.) and Virginia Tech (March 3, 1 p.m.), the latter of which ranked No. 47 in the nation a season ago.
Miami then returns home for three matches in three days, first hosting a doubleheader March 15 against Notre Dame (9 a.m.) and Boston University (5 p.m.), then playing Georgia Tech (March 17, 10 a.m.). The Fighting Irish placed No. 66 in 2018, while the Yellow Jackets finished sixth and made the NCAA Final Four.
Following a swing through North Carolina to face NC State (March 22, 3 p.m.) and North Carolina (March 24, 1 p.m.), Miami will host Clemson (March 29, 1 p.m.) and Wake Forest (March 31, noon). Those four teams concluded last season ranked No. 34, third, No. 38 and No. 27, respectively.
Miami’s final regular season road matches will take place at Boston College (April 5, 2 p.m.) and Syracuse (April 7, 11 a.m.), teams that respectively finished No. 53 and No. 31 in 2018.
The Hurricanes cap the regular season with home outings versus Louisville (April 12, 1 p.m.) and Virginia (April 13, noon). The Cardinals placed No. 68 a season ago, while the Cavaliers came in at No. 23.
