Swim / Dive Picks Up Two Wins in Atlanta
ATLANTA – The University of Miami women’s swimming & diving team impressed in its quad-meet Friday afternoon at the McAuley Aquatic Center.
Bolstered by a springboard sweep from freshman diver Millie Haffety and several impressive performances in the lanes, the Hurricanes earned wins over both FGCU (121-119) and SCAD (176-44). The Hurricanes’ victory over the Eagles was their first since the 2010-11 season.
Miami (3-1) trails the host Yellow Jackets heading into Saturday’s second day of competition.
The Hurricanes swimmers opened the afternoon with a time of 3:50.25 in the 400 medley relay, good for the second-best finish in the field. Miami’s top entry, comprised of senior Roxanne Yu, freshman Zorry Mason, freshman Maria Artigas and sophomore Sydney Knapp, came up just short of Georgia Tech (3:48.72).
Freshman Maddie Lauther, sophomore Chandler Sensibaugh, junior Iliana Oikonomou and freshman Coco Hull finished in a time of 4:03.56.
Haffety won the 1-meter (294.60), scoring nearly 40 points better than the second-place finisher, Cami Hidalgo of Georgia Tech (255.25). She’d sweep the springboard with a score of 293.70 in the 3-meter later on Friday afternoon, once again topping Hidalgo (284.05) in a much closer finish.
After Claire McGinnis took fourth in the 1000 freestyle (10:28.02) and senior tri-captain Katie Sickinger took eighth (10:41.07), sophomore Carmen San Nicolas Martinez picked up Miami’s first win of the meet with a time of 1:52.65 in the 200 free. Freshman Grace McGinnis (1:57.17) finished seventh.
Hull continued her strong start to her collegiate career with a third-place finish in the 50 free (23.20), while Mason picked up Miami’s second win and the fifth individual victory of her career with a time of 2:03.76 in the 200 IM. One of Miami’s tri-captains, Yu finished third (2:06.33) in the same event.
San Nicolas Martinez posted Miami’s best time in the 100 free (52.53) before Yu gave Miami some more momentum with the top time in the 200 back (2:01.13). Yu bested Georgia Tech’s Allie Paschal (2:01.27) for the top finish in the event and another win in one of her signature strokes.
Claire McGinnis took fifth in the 500 free (5:09.16) before Mason narrowly missed out on another win, finishing the 200 breast in 2:19.53 – just behind Georgia Tech’s Kristen Hepler (2:19.19).
The Hurricanes closed the meet with a time of 1:36.83 in the 200 free relay, with Knapp, Hull, Oikonomou and San Nicolas Martinez finishing third overall. Miami’s second entry – made up of the McGinnis sisters and two senior tri-captains, Sickinger and Sydney Story – finished in 1:39.97.
Miami returns to the McAuley Aquatic Center Saturday for a tri-meet with Georgia Tech and Notre Dame. Action is slated to begin at 11 a.m. from Atlanta.
