Perez-Somarriba Selected for Two Elite Fall Tournaments

CORAL GABLES, Fla. Junior Estela Perez-Somarriba of the University of Miami women’s tennis team has been named to the field of a prestigious ITA fall tournament for the second consecutive week.

On Aug. 30, Perez-Somarriba was one of 30 players chosen for the illustrious field for the Oracle ITA Masters. Friday, she was tabbed as one of 23 picks for the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships main draw.

Held Sept. 20-23 at the Malibu Racquet Club and Pepperdine University, both in Malibu, Calif., the Oracle ITA Masters in its fourth year of existence. The 32-player field features one individual from 26 conferences, along with six wild cards, two of whom have yet to be announced.

Perez-Somarriba, a two-time ITA All-American, is the lone ACC representative in the initial list of 30 selections. The Madrid native will be the third Hurricane to take part in the Oracle ITA Masters, joining Sinead Lohan and Stephanie Wagner, both of whom did so in singles and doubles in 2015.

Main draw action at the Riviera/ITA Women’s Tennis All-American Championships will take place at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., from Oct. 4-7. The 23 current competitors will be joined by nine players who advance through qualifying rounds.

This is the second year in a row Perez-Somarriba will compete in the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships, following a 1-2 showing in 2017 when she reached the back draw quarterfinals.

The Masters victor earns an automatic berth to the elite Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, held Nov. 7-11 in Surprise, Ariz., as do the eight Riviera quarterfinalists and two consolation finalists.

Perez-Somarriba is one of just seven players in both the Masters and the Riviera main draw. She is joined by Vanderbilt’s Fernanda Contreras, Michigan’s Kate Fahey, UCLA’s Jada Hart, Loyola Marymount’s Veronica Miroshnichenko, Idaho’s Marianna Petrei and Texas’ Bianca Turati.
