Three Hurricanes Named Freshman All-Americans
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Three University of Miami baseball student-athletes were recognized with Freshman All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, the publication announced Wednesday.
Relief pitcher Daniel Federman, catcher Isaac Quinoñes and shortstop Freddy Zamora were all honored by Collegiate Baseball for outstanding first seasons.
Federman, who split time out of the bullpen and as a starter, posted a team-low 2.25 ERA across 60.0 innings with 54 strikeouts and just 22 walks. The Pembroke Pines, Fla., native threw one complete game, made four starts and totaled 23 appearances in his first year while holding opponents to a paltry .203 batting average.
Quiñones started 44 games for the Hurricanes and ranked third with a .291 batting average. He totaled 10 doubles, one home run and 24 RBI and reached base at a .380 clip. The Miami native assumed starting catcher responsibilities two weeks into the season and made just one error behind the plate.
Zamora, an All-ACC Freshman Team selection, led the Hurricanes in several offensive categories in his first season. The Miami native ranked first in at-bats (211), hits (64), doubles (12), triples (four) and placed second on the team in runs (32), RBI (28) and steals (20). He had the fewest strikeouts of any regular starter (18) and reached base at a .388 clip.
The trio of Hurricanes become the first to be recognized with Freshman All-America honors since Frankie Bartow was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America in 2016.
