W. Tennis Faces Top-Seeded, Third-Ranked Duke in ACC Semis
CARY, N.C. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team will make its 10th appearance in the ACC Championship semifinals Friday morning against top-seeded Duke.
Fourth-seeded and No. 15-ranked Miami (16-6, 11-3 ACC) is set to square off with the third-ranked Blue Devils at Cary Tennis Park at 10 a.m. The action will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra HERE and live stats can be found HERE.
The Hurricanes sport a 12-16 all-time mark against Duke, including a 3-5 record at neutral sites and a 2-1 ledger in ACC Championship action. The first time the teams met this season, the Blue Devils earned a 6-1 home victory on March 25, which is the last time Miami dropped a match.
Making its 14th ACC Championship trip, Miami is 17-12 with 10 semifinal berths, six title match trips and one championship. The Hurricanes are 7-2 when seeded fourth, reaching the finale in 2007, winning the crown in 2013 and making the semifinals last year.
Miami, in the semifinals for the fifth time in the past six years and the third year in a row, has two nationally-ranked singles players. Sophomore Estela Perez-Somarriba is an ACC-best third in the country, while senior Sinead Lohan holds the No. 64 spot.
In doubles, Perez-Somarriba is featured in both of the Hurricanes’ ranked pairs, placing No. 45 with junior Ana Madcur and No. 79 with junior Daniella Roldan.
Duke is 22-2 (13-1 ACC) on the season, including 16-1 in its past 17 matches. Samantha Harris leads a quintet of ranked Blue Devils, checking in at sixth nationally. She is followed by No. 28 Kelly Chen, No. 54 Meible Chi, No. 105 Kaitlyn McCarthy and No. 118 Ellyse Hamlin.
Chen and Harris form the fifth-ranked doubles duo in the country, while Hamlin and McCarthy team together in the No. 12 position.
The victor of Saturday’s contest will take on either second-seeded and fourth-ranked Georgia Tech or third-seeded and second-ranked North Carolina in the title match Sunday at 10 a.m.
