Perez-Somarriba Garners Fourth ACC Weekly Honor
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – For the fourth time in 2018, Estela Perez-Somarriba of the University of Miami women’s tennis team has won ACC Player of the Week, as announced Tuesday evening.
This is the third time in five weeks the sophomore earned the distinction, along with March 13 and March 20. She previously picked up the accolade on Jan. 23.
“Estela has been taking care of the process,” Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “She has a lot of tennis ahead and needs to stay humble and hard working.”
Perez-Somarriba won both of her singles matches in straight sets at the top spot last week. She helped Miami to a 6-1 victory over Boston College Friday and a 7-0 triumph against then-No. 25 Syracuse two days later.
Currently ranked a career-best third in the country, Perez-Somarriba improved to 19-1 in spring singles play with her two wins, including 10-1 versus top-90 foes.
Perez-Somarriba opened the weekend by downing then-No. 89 Asiya Dair, 6-2, 6-1, in the match against the Eagles.
The Madrid native followed that with a 6-4, 6-4 defeat of then-No. 10 Gabriela Knutson to clinch the win over Syracuse. She moved to 7-0 this spring against top-35 opponents, including 3-0 versus top-10 players, with the victory.
Perez-Somarriba and No. 16 Miami (12-6, 8-3 ACC) will be back on the court Sunday at 11 a.m. to wrap up the regular season home slate against Virginia Tech at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
