W. Tennis Rises to No. 18, Features Four Ranked Pairs

CORAL GABLES, Fla. The University of Miami women’s tennis team ascended five positions to No. 18 nationally in this week’s Oracle/ITA rankings, as announced Tuesday afternoon.

The spot is just one shy of the Hurricanes’ best mark of the season, as they were No. 17 from Jan. 24 through Feb. 19.

Miami (10-6, 6-3 ACC) is one of seven ACC teams in the top 25, along with top-ranked North Carolina, third-ranked Duke, fourth-ranked Georgia Tech, No. 19 Florida State, No. 20 Virginia and No. 25 Syracuse. In addition, Wake Forest is No. 27, NC State is No. 42 and Clemson is No. 45.

The Hurricanes, led by 17th-year head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews, again have two ranked singles players. Estela Perez-Somarriba moved up two spots to a career-best sixth nationally, placing her second in the ACC and third among sophomores. Senior Sinead Lohan checks in at No. 75 this week.

Miami is one of two schools in the country, along with No. 14 UCLA, to have four ranked doubles pairs. All six Hurricanes who have competed in at least six matches are on the doubles list.

Perez-Somarriba and junior Ana Madcur lead the way at No. 34, while Perez-Somarriba also holds the No. 66 spot with junior Daniella Roldan.

Lohan and Madcur check in at No. 82, followed by sophomore Dominika Paterova and freshman Ulyana Shirokova at No. 88. This is the first time Roldan and Shirokova have been ranked as Hurricanes, as well as the first time this season for Paterova.

The last time Miami had four ranked pairs at the same time was April 7, 2015, a list that included Lohan in the No. 88 spot.

Miami begins a three-match homestand Friday at noon, when it takes on Boston College at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
