CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team will seek to continue its perfect record at home Friday, when it takes on top-ranked Wake Forest at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
LIVE STATS
The match is scheduled for 3 p.m., with live stats available HERE.
THE SERIES
The Hurricanes (8-6, 0-3 ACC) lead the all-time series 13-10, but the Demon Deacons have won the last three contests, sweeping each of them. In 2014, the then-No. 72 Canes upset an 18th-ranked Wake Forest team in Coral Gables, 4-3, after winning the first three points of the contest.
HIGHLIGHTING MIAMI’S 2018 SEASON
-Senior Christian Langmo and freshman Adria Soriano defeated No. 11 Eero Vasa and Korey Lovett of UCF in their doubles debut to check in at No. 50 in this week’s Oracle/ITA rankings.
-In Miami’s last home match, freshman Pablo Aycart made his dual singles debut with a 6-3, 6-2, victory over Cleveland State’s Mirko Radosevic.
-Miami’s 6-2 start to the spring season was the Hurricanes’ best start since 2013.
-Miami freshmen have captured 24 singles wins this spring. Freshman Bojan Jankulovski has already reached double digits this spring, bolstering a 10-4 singles record. He is tied for team-high two singles wins in conference play.
-Langmo, who also has two ACC victories, ascended nine spots to check in at No. 90 in the Oracle/ITA rankings this week, the highest by a Miami player this season. Freshmen Soriano (No. 99) and Jankulovski (No. 101) hae also been ranked in singles play this season.
-The Hurricanes, who are 7-0 at home, have posted a seven-match win streak in Coral Gables for the first time since 2014, when the Hurricanes won nine straight between Feb. 22 and March 25.
LAST TIME OUT
Despite a memorable doubles debut by No. 50 Soriano and Langmo last Sunday, Miami was on the wrong end of the ultimate comeback against UCF in Orlando, Fla. The match was decided by a 2-hour-40-minute, two-tiebreaker thriller at the No. 4 spot, where redshirt sophomore Dane Dunlap fell to Mikhail Sokolovskiy, 7-5, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (8-6). Dunlap had a match point, 6-5, in the third-set tiebreaker.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
The Demon Deacons (13-0, 2-0 ACC) were the preseason No. 1 in the Oracle/ITA rankings and have held the top-ranked position in all nine rankings since. Friday’s contest will be third of the week for the Deacs, who swept No. 7 Illinois Tuesday, 4-0, and dominated No. 18 Duke Wednesday, 6-1. Wake Forest has played only three true road matches this season, most recently sweeping Virginia Tech in its conference opener.
Five Demon Deacons are nationally ranked in singles, led by No. 7 Petros Chrysochos. Borna Gojo and Skander Mansouri and ranked back-to-back, checking in at No. 29 and No. 30, respectively, while No. 95 Yuval Solomon and No. 108 Christian Seraphim are also featured in the top 125.
Wake Forest boasts three ranked duos as well, starting with the second-ranked Mansouri and Chrysochos. Seraphim and Julian Zlobinsky check in at No. 27, while No. 44 Gojo and Mansouri complete the triad.
UP NEXT
Next up for the Canes is another home match against a top-20 side, as No. 16 NC State comes to town on Sunday. First serve is scheduled for noon.
