W. Tennis to Host Top-Ranked UNC, No. 46 NC State
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – For the first time in two weeks, the University of Miami women’s tennis team will be in action at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center this weekend.
No. 31 Miami (8-3, 4-0 ACC) meets the nation’s top-ranked team, North Carolina, Friday at 4 p.m. It then squares off with No. 46 NC State Sunday at 11 a.m.
The Hurricanes’ contest against the Tar Heels will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra HERE, while its match with the Wolfpack can be seen HERE. Live stats for both are available HERE. The first 50 fans at Friday’s match will receive Miami pillowcases.
Miami is 14-15 all-time against North Carolina, including 6-4 at home. Most recently, the Hurricanes dropped a 4-0 decision to the Tar Heels in the ACC Championship semifinals on April 29, 2017 in Rome, Ga.
The Hurricanes have a 15-0 record versus NC State, including a 13-0 mark dating back to 2005. Miami has shut out the Wolfpack eight times and earned a 4-3 home victory on March 3, 2017 in the most recent matchup between the two sides.
Led by 17th-year head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews, the Hurricanes, who are coming off a 4-3 win Wednesday at sixth-ranked Georgia Tech, have two singles players in the national rankings. Sophomore Estela Perez-Somarriba checks in at No. 18, while senior Sinead Lohan places No. 108.
Additionally, Miami has the No. 34 doubles pair in the country in the form of Perez-Somarriba and junior Ana Madcur.
North Carolina heads into the weekend with a 14-1 (3-0 ACC) record and features six nationally-ranked singles players. Makenna Jones is first at No. 12 and she is followed by No. 16 Alle Sanford, No. 24 Sara Daavettila, No. 40 Jessie Aney, No. 78 Alexa Graham and No. 112 Chloe Ouellet-Pizer.
The Tar Heels also have three doubles duos on the doubles list with Aney and Graham leading the way as the country’s second-ranked pair. Daavettila and Sanford place No. 16, while Jones and Ouellet-Pizer place No. 64.
Entering its Friday match at No. 22 Florida State, NC State is 8-8 (1-2 ACC) in 2018. The Wolfpack has one singles player in the national rankings in No. 51 Anna Rogers.
NC State also has a nationally-ranked doubles pair, as Rogers holds the No. 13 position with Claudia Witorkin.
After its contests against the Tar Heels and Wolfpack, Miami will head to Charlottesville, Va., to face No. 26 Virginia March 23 at 3 p.m.
