Women’s Tennis Rises to No. 17 Nationally
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team ascended two spots to No. 17 in this week’s Oracle/ITA rankings, as announced Wednesday.
This is the third consecutive raking in which the Hurricanes, who have yet to play a dual match, are in the top 20 nationally.
Miami is one of four ACC teams on the list, along with fifth-ranked North Carolina, seventh-ranked Georgia Tech and ninth-ranked Duke.
The Hurricanes opened the season over the weekend at the Neil Schiff Tennis, posting a 28-8 overall record in the Miami Spring Invite against second-ranked Vanderbilt, then-No. 13 Ohio State and No. 21 Kentucky.
Miami went 20-4 on the weekend in singles play, with sophomore Estela Perez-Somarriba highlighting the results with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 victory over fourth-ranked Fernanda Contreras of Vanderbilt. The Madrid native garnered the year’s opening ACC Player of the Week honor for her performance.
The Hurricanes return to the court Saturday at 4 p.m. ET against UC Santa Barbara in their first match of ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Auburn, Ala. Miami then plays No. 13 Auburn or Tulane the next day and will earn an ITA National Team Indoor Championship berth with two wins.
