Dinsmore Advances to Finals at FINA Worlds
BUDAPEST, Hungary (USA Diving) – University of Miami redshirt sophomore David Dinsmore finished fourth in the men’s 10-meter semifinals on Friday to qualify for Saturday’s finals representing Team USA at the FINA World Championships.
Dinsmore scored 483.10 points to make his first World Championships final after missing out two years ago. Only Russia’s Aleksandr Bondar (509.10), Great Britain’s Tom Daley (498.65) and China’s Chen Aisen (488.55) scored higher in the semifinal than Dinsmore, who won the NCAA national championship for men’s platform as a redshirt freshman last year.
“It’s really exciting. Last time I had a good meet but there was tough competition and it didn’t work out,” said Dinsmore, who finished 15th in the semifinals at the 2015 World Championships in Kazan, Russia. “Especially this year after the Olympic year, I wanted to come out and dive as best I could and things worked out.”
Dinsmore hit all six dives in the semifinals and scored more than 80 points on three of them, including his final two dives – a reverse 3 ½ tuck that scored 85 points and a back 2 ½ with 2 ½ twists that earned 86.40 points. He advanced to the semifinals after placing 12th in the morning preliminaries when he missed his back 3 ½ tuck but hit his five other dives.
“I was very happy with (semifinals). I have a couple things I need to fix for (finals), but I’m looking forward to it,” Dinsmore said. “I was a little worked up in the prelims and got a little nervous, but I tried to relax in the semis.”
Earlier in the week, Dinsmore won the bronze medal in the mixed 3-meter/10-meter team event with Krysta Palmer.
Jordan Windle (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) also competed in the men’s 10-meter event and finished 26th in the preliminaries.
Windle finished with 351.75 points, highlighted by 72 points on his inward 3 ½ tuck and 66.60 points on his front 4 ½ tuck. It was his first World Championships competing in an individual event.
Diving competition at the World Championships wraps up Sunday with Dinsmore in men’s 10-meter final and Lauren Reedy (Rochester Hills, Mich./Columbia, Mo.) and Briadam Herrera (Miami, Fla.) competing for Team USA in the mixed synchronized 3-meter event.
