Miami, Perez-Somarriba & Lohan Top-Five in Region
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team concluded the 2017 season ranked fourth in the Southeast Region, as announced Wednesday afternoon by the ITA.
One of four top-25 teams in the region, the Hurricanes have now finished in the top four of the Southeast Region since shifting to that affiliation in 2010.
In addition to the team rankings, the individual lists were also revealed Wednesday and a pair of Hurricanes made the cut.
Freshman Estela Perez-Somarriba placed second in the Southeast Region, one of the most competitive areas in the nation. Junior Sinead Lohan finished just three spots behind her, checking in at fifth in the rankings.
Perez-Somarriba was No. 14 in the regional rankings to begin 2017 and her 12-spot ascension to the second position is the second-largest of any player on the list. The Madrid native went 34-7 in her rookie season and reached the semifinals of the NCAA Singles Championship.
Lohan has now finished top-five in the region in all three of her years at Miami, as she was fifth in 2014-15 and second in 2015-16. A native of Waterford, Ireland, Lohan earned 13 victories over ranked opponents in 2016-17 and competed in the NCAA Singles Championship for the third time.
This is the third consecutive year two Hurricanes have finished the season in the top five of the ITA Southeast Region rankings, as Lohan and Stephanie Wagner did so in each of the past two. This is also the third straight campaign a Miami player has ended in the top three.
Nationally, Perez-Somarriba and Lohan concluded this season at No. 26 and No. 21, respectively, in the ITA rankings. On the team list, the Hurricanes checked in at No. 25.
