Lohan and Perez-Somarriba Named First Team All-ACC
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – For the second year in a row, two members of the University of Miami women’s tennis team were voted as First Team All-ACC selections.
Junior Sinead Lohan and freshman Estela Perez-Somarriba were both among the nine players on the conference’s first team, as announced Thursday morning by the league office.
“We are really happy for Sinead and Estela,” Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “Both these ladies have grown as athletes this season and we are looking forward to an amazing ending.”
A second-team pick in 2015 and a first-team choice last year, Lohan becomes the sixth Hurricane to garner at least three All-ACC distinctions. In addition, Lohan is one of eight players this season earning the honor for the third or fourth time.
Perez-Somarriba is one of three freshmen among the First Team All-ACC picks and is the 17th individual in Miami history to log at least one All-ACC selection.
Lohan is currently ranked No. 16 in the nation in singles and No. 73 in doubles. She has peaked as high as fifth and No. 47, respectively, in 2016-17.
A native of Waterford, Ireland, Lohan leads the Hurricanes with 13 singles victories over ranked opponents during her junior campaign. Eight of her wins have come over top-50 players, including four versus individuals in the top 20.
Despite retiring from one match due to injury and then missing four others, Lohan is second on the team in singles triumphs. Her most recent win made her the ninth Hurricane to tally 100 in a career.
“Lohan is simply a lion. She has had some adversity this season, but has found her stride down this final stretch,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. “She is the type of person who really defines a program like this one. The bar is really high for Siny and she is learning to consistently bring it.”
Perez-Somarriba is ranked No. 34 in the country in singles, one spot shy of her career high, and is a team-best 27-6 in singles. She has a 20-3 mark this spring, including a 17-3 ledger in dual match action and a 12-2 record in ACC play, plus is 6-1 against top-100 opponents in 2017.
The Madrid native defeated each of the other two freshmen named First Team All-ACC, topping then-fourth-ranked Sara Daavettila of North Carolina and then-No. 23 Meibile Chi of Duke. The wins came in back-to-back matches and she dropped a total of 11 games over five sets.
“Credit to our associate head coach, Laura Vallverdu, for recruiting such an amazing person in Estela and for really planting herself by her side this season to help nurture the talent that we know is so incredible,” Yaroshuk-Tews said.
Lohan and Perez-Somarriba give the Hurricanes their 31st and 32nd All-ACC accolades in just 13 years in the conference. This is the 11th time—including the fourth in a row—Miami has had multiple players earn the recognition.
No. 32 Miami (11-10, 8-6 ACC) will begin play in the ACC Championship Friday at 1 p.m., in Rome, Ga. The fourth-seeded Hurricanes received a double-bye into the quarterfinals.
