Miami Travels to NC State and Duke
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis program returns to the state of North Carolina to face off against North Carolina State University and No. 46 Duke University, beginning with a trip to Raleigh, N.C., on Friday.
The Canes enter the weekend on a two match-winning streak after downing conference rivals Boston College and Notre Dame to pick up their first two ACC victories of the season.
Miami (8-9, 2-6) will enter the weekend with a trio of Canes represented in the ITA rankings, with junior Piotr Lomacki rising to No. 45 in singles, as announced Tuesday.
Joining Lomacki for the second week in a row, seniors Max Andrews and Jesse Flores ascended 16 spots in the latest rankings, forming the No. 40 doubles tandem in the country.
Friday’s 2:30 p.m. matchup will mark the 21st meeting between the Hurricanes and Wolfpack, with UM leading the all-time series, 15-5. Miami dropped its most recent matchup versus then-No. 41 NC State, 4-3, on April 8, 2016.
Last season, the Canes dropped the doubles point against the Wolfpack and were unable to claw their way back in singles play.
NC State (12-11, 3-5 ACC) is represented in the ITA national polls by a pair of players including Horton at No. 80 and Alexis Galarneau at No 103 in singles. The duo also teams up to form the nation’s No. 49 doubles pair.

Saturday’s 3 p.m. matchup will mark the 46th meeting between the Hurricanes and the Blue Devils, as UM leads the all-time series, 23-22. Miami dropped its most recent matchup against then-No. 66 Duke, 5-2, on March 11, 2016.
In last season’s matchup, a quartet of matches featured eight individuals returning to the courts this season in Durham, N.C. Then-No. 20 Nicolas Alvarez took down then-No. 28 Lomacki, 6-4, 6-4, while TJ Pura defeated junior Nile Clark, 6-1, 6-0. Junior Niclas Genovese also fell against Ryan Dickerson, 2-6, 0-6. Andrews earned the lone singles victory for the Canes, defeating Catalin Mateas, 6-3, 7-6.
Duke (12-8, 5-4 ACC) features three nationally-ranked singles players, including Alvarez at No 34, Spencer Furman at No. 89 and Mateas at No. 100.
In doubles, Furman teams up with Nick Stachowiak as the nation’s No. 61 doubles team, while Mateas pairs with Vincent Lin to form the No. 85 duo in the country.

Next weekend Miami will return home to the Neil Schiff Tennis Center as it concludes the 2017 regular season against No. 3 Virginia and Virginia Tech. The Canes will open the weekend April 21 at 3 p.m., as they welcome the defending national champions to Coral Gables. Miami will then wrap up the regular season when it faces Virginia Tech April 23 at 12 p.m., as the team celebrates senior day.
