@CanesTrack Excels on Day 2 at Florida Relays

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Miami track and field program continued its successful showing Friday at the 2017 Pepsi Florida Relays.

The Hurricanes had several student-athletes post times and marks that rank among the best in Miami track and field history.

“We competed well today,” MIami director of track and field/cross country Amy Deem said. “I have challenged the team to make improvements each week and I believe in most event areas we are doing that.” 

Shakima Wimbley won the women’s 400m with a time of 52.05 seconds, while Brittny Ellis finished 14th overall with a time of 53.91 seconds. Henri Delauze was Miami’s top male finisher in the 400m with a time of 47.88 seconds.

Ebony Morrison ran a season-best time of 13.09 seconds to place eighth overall in the women’s college 100m hurdles, while Stefani Kerrison finished 20th overall with a time of 13.47 seconds.

McKinly Brown excelled in the men’s college 400m hurdles, finishing eighth with a personal-best time of 51.76 seconds that ranks third all-time in UM history. Anna Runia also impressed in the women’s college 400m hurdles, running a personal-best time of 58.61 seconds to place seventh overall.

Kristina Knott was 12th overall in the women’s college 100m with a time of 11.47 seconds, while Hurricanes track legend and NCAA champion Murielle Ahoure won the event with a time of 10.96 seconds. Isaiah Taylor was Miami’s top finisher on the men’s side with a time of 10.59 seconds.

The men’s 4x400m relay team of Brown, Delauze, Breon Mullings and Ibrahim Dodo finished second in preliminaries with a time of 3:09.84 and earning a spot in Saturday’s final.

Michael Miano finished the men’s 3000m steeplechase in 9:53.76, moving into fifth place all-time in UM history.

While the Canes had a strong day on the track, Miami also excelled in the field events.

Zakiya Rashid had a big personal best in the women’s discus, finishing fifth in the invitational section with a throw of 54.10m that ranks third all-time in UM history. Daniel Polinski’s personal-best throw of 51.94m placed him ninth overall in the men’s college discus. Polinski’s throw ranks fourth all-time in UM history.

Carlos Mangum finished 13th overall in the men’s invitational hammer throw with a mark of 59.96m, while Karyna Armstrong posted a season-best in the women’s hammer throw with a mark of 53.41m.

Amy Taintor led the Hurricanes in the women’s long jump, finishing third with a mark of 5.97m. Erika Voyzey finished ninth in the women’s invitational high jump with a mark of 1.68m.

Following this weekend’s action, the Canes will return to Coral Gables, Fla., to compete at their final home meet of the 2017 season, the Hurricane Alumni Invitational. Senior standouts Shakima Wimbley, Ebony Morrison, Aiyanna Stiverne and Carlos Mangum are among the Miami seniors that will be honored at their final home track meet as Hurricanes.
