Miami Set to Host Mississippi State and FAU

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis program will host No. 16 Mississippi State University and the Florida Atlantic University this weekend at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

Friday’s 3 p.m. matchup will be the 10th meeting between Miami and Mississippi State, but only the second of the millennium. The all-time series is tied at five matches apiece, with UM winning the most recent matchup over No. 15 MSU, 5-2, on March 16, 2001.

Miami junior Piotr Lomacki rose to No. 63 in the ITA singles rankings, released Wednesday, while the Bulldogs enter the match with the third ranked singles player, Nuno Borges, and a top 50 doubles pair, No. 44 Niclas Braun and Trevor Foshey.

Sunday’s 3 p.m. matchup will mark the 22nd meeting between the Hurricanes and the Owls. Miami boasts an all-time record of 20-1 against Florida Atlantic. The last time Miami faced off in a dual match with FAU was on Jan. 17, 2016, earning a 5-2 victory.

Last season’s matchup featured six current Hurricanes and Owls going head-to-head in singles play. No. 23 Lomacki faced Alexander Gitin, walking away with the victory, 6-3, 6-4, while senior Jesse Flores delivered a strong performance against Anthony Schohn winning both sets, 6-2, 6-1.

After falling to Remi Chancerel, 6-4, 7-6, senior Max Andrews will look to avenge his loss on Sunday, if he faces the junior.

The Canes (2-1) faced Troy University this past weekend, earning a 6-1 victory over the Trojans. Miami opened the match strong with a pair of doubles victories, to head into singles play with the one point advantage. In singles play, Lomacki earned his second dual match victory of the spring season, downing Andy Lau, 6-3, 6-4. At No. 6, junior Kevin Bondar placed the Canes at match point, 3-0, after defeating Christopher Tasker, 7-5, 6-4. Andrews clinched the match, taking down Mustapha Belcora, 7-6 (5), 6-1.

Next weekend the Hurricanes will open ACC play when they host Clemson University Sunday, Feb. 19 at 12 p.m.
