Men's Tennis Opens Fall at Southern Intercollegiate Championships

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team will begin its 2016-17 campaign this weekend at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships held at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.

“Our expectations as coaches are that every one of our players comes out with energy and a positive, competitive attitude,” assistant coach Petar Danolic said. “The guys have worked very hard for the last couple of weeks since the start of training. It is exciting for us as coaches to have the opportunity to see our players compete for the first time. We are all looking forward to this weekend’s tournament.”

Six Hurricanes will be making the trip to Georgia this weekend, including seniors Max Andrews and Jesse Flores and juniors Kevin Bondar, Niclas Genovese, Christian Langmo and Piotr Lomacki

Last week, both Langmo and Lomacki were recognized in the preseason Oracle ITA poll for both the singles and doubles rankings. Lomacki enters the tournament ranked the No. 31 singles player in the nation and Langmo is ranked No. 58. The duo checked in at No. 50 in the doubles polls.

Last season, Andrews led the team with 24 singles victories followed by Lomacki with 20, giving Miami two members joining the school’s 20-win club in the same year for the first time since 2010.

The tournament, which runs from Friday through Sunday, features 170 singles players and 81 doubles pairs from 32 schools, including: Arkansas, Armstrong State, Baylor, Belmont, Central Florida, Clemson, East Tennessee State, Eastern Kentucky, Elon, Florida, Gardner-Webb, Georgia, Georgia College, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State, Kentucky, Lander, Lipscomb, Louisville, Miami, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, UNC Charlotte, Old Dominion, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Tennessee Tech, Texas Tech, Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech.

Fans who make their way to Athens this weekend can also experience the ITA Hall of Fame, which will be open on Thursday from 12-2 p.m., Friday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Saturday from 12-2 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. The Hall of Fame is located adjacent to the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
