Under the Helmet: Kc McDermott
By Kevin Ivany
Whether he’s creating holes for running backs to run through or protecting the quarterback, University of Miami junior Kc McDermott loves the fight in the trenches on the offensive line.
Away from the gridiron, McDermott is a devoted fisherman.
A fierce competitor on the field, McDermott is equally competitive when searching for fish.
“The biggest fish I almost reeled in could have been a record size amberjack,” McDermott said. “We didn’t end up bringing it in, but if we did, it would have been close (to a record). It was a big fish, close to 350 pounds.”
Although he did not reel in a record-breaking amberjack that particular day, McDermott still enjoys taking to the high seas in search of his next big catch.
For McDermott and his family, fishing has always been a favorite pastime.
“Ever since I can remember, we have been going out to the Keys, Costa Rica and all throughout the Caribbean fishing,” McDermott said. “It is something we enjoy doing as a family and we honestly do it to relax.”
Although waking up before the sun rises and spending the morning and afternoon fighting fish may not be what most individuals would consider relaxing, that’s exactly how the McDermott family would define being out on a boat.
“Some people ask how we find waking up at 5:30 in the morning to get on a boat and fight fish relaxing, but once you get out there on the water there is nothing I can think of that is more relaxing,” McDermott said. “To just sit back and wait for that one to bite is just such a great time.”
Following Miami’s match up with Appalachian State, the Hurricanes will have the week off on Sept. 24 and if you are looking to find McDermott, it’s a safe bet he will be found on the water, looking for his next big catch.
