Miami Opens ACC Championship Against VT
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The 11th-seeded University of Miami men will face sixth-seeded Virginia Tech on Thursday at 4 p.m. in the 2016 Atlantic Coast Conference Tennis Championship, at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.
Miami is 8-11 all-time in the ACC Championship, since the first appearance in the 2005 season. In 2008 UM played its way to the finals, defeating Maryland, North Carolina and Florida State, then ultimately falling to Virginia in the championship.
The Canes (8-14, 3-9 ACC) battled Virginia Tech (15-7, 7-5 ACC) on Friday, April 15, falling 6-1 to the No. 40 Hokies. In that match, junior Max Andrews defeated No. 65 Andreas Bjerrehus at the second singles spot.
Wednesday’s lone first-round match of the ACC Championship finds No. seed 12 Louisville facing No. 13 Boston College at 1 p.m.
The NC State-Clemson second-round match opens the slate on Thursday at 1 p.m. No. 10 Duke faces No. 7 Notre Dame in other 1 p.m. action. A pair of 4 p.m. matches are slated, with No. 5 Georgia Tech facing the winner of Wednesday’s Louisville-Boston College match, and No. 6 Virginia Tech against No. 11 Miami.
Teams receiving double-byes to Friday’s quarterfinal round along with No. 1 Virginia include No. 2 Wake Forest, No. 3 Florida State and No. 4 North Carolina.
Action in the 2016 ACC Men’s Tennis Championship will continue with a pair of 2 p.m. semifinal matches on Saturday and will conclude with Sunday’s 2 p.m. championship match.
The Saturday semifinal match featuring the highest seeded team and Sunday’s championship match will be streamed live by ESPN3. Former United States Davis Cup team captain Patrick McEnroe will serve as the lead announcer. McEnroe, who captained the U.S. Davis Cup championship team in 2007, will be joined by Paul Torricelli on second chair. Torricelli spent over two decades as head coach at Northwestern, where his teams twice went unbeaten in Big Ten play. Brian Clark will also be on hand as the sideline reporters for the men’s matches.
