Canes Cap Regular Season at Va Tech & UVa
CORAL GABLES, Fla.- This weekend the University of Miami will wrap up its regular season campaign on the road in Virginia. The Canes will take on ACC rivals No. 40 Virginia Tech on Friday, April 15 at 1 p.m. in Blacksburg, Va., then No. 1 Virginia on Sunday, April 17 in Charlottesville, Va., at Noon.
Miami (8-12; 3-7 ACC) enters the weekend with a recent 5-2 win against Louisville at home. The Canes won five singles matches to earn the victory. UM still has one ranked singles player with No. 37 Piotr Lomacki, and doubles pair Bernard Tefel and Max Andrews are ranked No. 72.
No. 40 Virginia Tech owns a spring record of 14-7, and are 6-5 for league play. The Canes hold an all-time record of 8-9 against the Hokies. Most recently the Hokies fell to No. 31 Georgia Tech 6-1 on Sunday in Atlanta.
Virginia Tech sees four singles players on the ITA/Oracle list: No. 25 Joao Monteiro, No. 65 Andreas Bjerrehus, No. 80 Edoardo Tessaro, and No. 108 Amerigo Contini. The Hokies hold one doubles pair with No. 12 Andreas Bjerrehus Joao Monteiro.
Against the Cavaliers, Miami is 4-16 overall. Virginia (20-3, 9-1 ACC) is the top ranked team in the country and recently logged a 7-0 win over Clemson on April 10.
Virginia claims multiple names on the ITA polls in both singles and doubles. For singles, the Cavaliers see No. 6 Thai-Son Kwiatkowski, No. 9 Ryan Shane, No. 39 Collin Altamirano, No. 74 Alexander Ritschard and No. 118 JC Aragone. For doubles, Virginia holds three doubles pairs with No. 3 Luca Corinteli and Ryan Shane, No. 10 Mac Styslinger and Thai-Son Kwiatkowski and No. 45 Henrik Wiersholm and JC Aragone.
