Gonzalez Plays into QF at El Salvador Futures
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Former University of Miami men’s tennis standout Wilfredo Gonzalez played his way to the quarterfinals of the El Salvador F2 Futures event Nov. 16-22 in La Libertad, El Salvador.
Gonzalez, from Guatemala, won a pair of singles matches in the qualifying bracket to earn a place in the main draw, where he won two more matches at the Federacion Salvadoreña de Tenis. In doubles, Gonzalez paired with Franco Feitt of Argentina, playing into the quarterfinal match.
In singles, Gonzalez was dealt the fourth seed of the qualifying draw bracket. He defeated Rafael Eduardo Gonzalez Retana in the first round, 6-1, 6-0, then took down Jeff Guerrero of Mexico, 6-4, 7-6 (4), to qualify for the main draw.
Gonzalez battled fellow qualifier Gregorio Cordonnier of Argentina in the first round, earning the 7-6(5), 7-5 victory, then upset the eighth-seeded Alejandro Mendoza of Bolivia in the second round, 7-6(5), 6-3. In the quarterfinals, Gonzalez was defeated, 6-1, 6-3, by the fourth seed, American Adam El Mihdawy.
In doubles, Gonzalez and Feitt won the first round 6-3, 6-1 over Ariel Ilarslan Russo (PAN) and Daniel Mora (COL), but were defeated in the quarterfinal by the top seed, Emilio Gomez (ECU) and Darian King (BAR), 6-3, 7-5.
This week, Gonzalez is playing in his home country at the Guatemala F2 Futures. He is in the main draw singles and is pairing with current Hurricane Piotr Lomacki in doubles.
