Yaroshuk-Tews Releases W. Tennis Spring Slate
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami women’s tennis head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews announced Friday the team’s schedule for the 2016 spring season.
The slate has 15 home dates, including non-conference matches against Baylor and Ohio State, both of which finished the 2014-15 season in the top 25. Miami will also host two ACC teams that ended last year in the top 20—Georgia Tech and Virginia.
“This, and every season, is about consistency. We always have a tough schedule from the start and that’s for a reason,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. “I don’t believe in padding things and looking for false confidence. We need to consistently compete against the best and get tested all the time.”
The Hurricanes will open the season Jan. 15-17 by hosting the Miami Spring Invite at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. The event will also feature Ole Miss, Texas and reigning NCAA champion Vanderbilt.
After that, Miami will welcome Auburn, Michigan State and Middle Tennessee to Coral Gables for ITA Kick-Off Weekend Jan. 22-23. The Hurricanes, seeded first in the group, will face Middle Tennessee the 22nd at 10 a.m., while the Tigers and Spartans play at 2 p.m. The winners will square off the following day at 2 p.m., while the consolation match is set for 10 a.m.
The victor of the four-team pod will earn a berth in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, held Feb. 5-8 in Madison, Wis. Prior to that, the Hurricanes will begin ACC play Jan. 29 at 3 p.m. at home against Georgia Tech.
Miami has three dual matches scheduled for February: at home against Baylor (Feb. 15, 11 a.m.), at North Carolina (Feb. 26, 5 p.m.) and at Duke (Feb. 28, 12 p.m.). All three teams finished in the top 20 last season, including Baylor eighth and North Carolina fourth.
The Hurricanes open month of March at Florida State on the 2nd at 2 p.m. and then faces Notre Dame at home on the 6th at 10 a.m. The Hurricanes then have their final two non-conference contests, both at home, squaring off against Columbia March 14 at 11 a.m. and Ohio State March 16 at 11 a.m.
Yaroshuk-Tews’ team also has four other March matches on its schedule: home against Virginia Tech (March 18, 11 a.m.), at Pittsburgh (March 20, 11 a.m.) and home against both Virginia (March 25, 1 p.m.) and Boston College (March 27, 11 a.m.).
Miami will play five matches in April to round out their regular season, with the first three coming on the road. The Hurricanes travel to Clemson (April 2, 12 p.m.), Wake Forest (April 8, 4 p.m.) and NC State (April 9, 11 a.m.). The team will then wrap up at home with matches against Syracuse (April 15, 11 a.m.) and Louisville (April 17, 12 p.m.).
“I’m excited to get this 2016 season underway,” Yaroshuk-Tews said. “Our kids love competing and so do our coaches. It’s going to be fun.”
The ACC Championships are scheduled for April 20-24 at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.
