Three Canes Face Nationally-Ranked Opponents
Three University of Miami Hurricanes faced three ranked singles players and a ranked doubles duo Saturday at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships held at the Ring Tennis Center in Gainesville, Fla.
No. 45 Piotr Lomacki, Christian Langmo and Max Andrews each played their way into the singles main draw Round of 16, where they each faced an opponent ranked in the top-90 in the nation. No. 48 Lomacki and Andrews also faced a nationally-ranked pair in the doubles Round of 16.
In singles, No. 45 Lomacki defeated Jose Gracia of Florida State in three sets, 6-1, 6-7, 6-4, but then came up short, 6-2, 6-2, to Florida’s No. 86 Elliott Orkin in the Round of 16.
Langmo also played to three sets in his Round of 32 matchup, downing Florida’s No. 108 Gordon Watson, 7-5, 2-6, 7-5. In Langmo’s Round of 16 match, No. 24 Christopher Eubanks of Georgia Tech was too much, defeating the Cane 7-5, 6-3.
Andrews made quick work of Casey Kay of Georgia Tech, defeating the Yellowjacket 6-4, 6-2 in the Round of 32. Andrews then played an epic round against the top seed in the tournament, but ultimately fell, 6-2, 7-6 (12) to No. 60 Maxx Lipman of Florida.
In doubles play, No. 48 Lomacki and Andrews came up short to South Florida’s No. 40 duo of Dominic Cotrone and Sasha Guzun, 8-5.
