Canes Prepare for SE Regional Championship
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team is preparing for a competitive weekend at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships held at the Ring Tennis Center in Gainesville, Fla.
Eight Hurricanes will take the court this weekend, with all eight playing in both singles and in doubles.
Thursday morning six Hurricanes will open the tournament in the qualifying singles bracket. At 10 a.m. sophomore Niclas Genovese will play Sebastian Butler of USF and Jesse Flores will take on Daniel Yun of Georgia Tech. Kevin Bondar will face Casey Kay from Georgia Tech. With a win, the men will play in the Round of 32 match at 1 p.m. the same day.
Three Canes – Bernard Tefel, Max Andrews and Nile Clark – were dealt a bye in the first round and will open their tournament in second-round action on Thursday. Tefel, a native of Miami, faces the winner of Sam Chaffin of FGCU or Marvin Spiering of Georgia Southern. Andrews, from Manchester, England, will play Gerald Nickerson of FAU at 10 a.m. Clark, of Philadelphia, will await the winner of the matchup between Pierre-Emmanuel Fossier of Stetson and Elijah Melendez of Georgia Tech.
Friday morning, the qualifying singles matches will conclude, leading into main draw singles and doubles play.
Two Hurricanes have been seeded in the main draw event, as No. 45 Piotr Lomacki is the No. 7 overall seed while Christian Langmo is in the No. 9-16 group. Lomacki opens play against Ristomatti Lanne (Georgia Southern) and Langmo will face Karlyn Small (FAMU) on Friday in the Round of 64.
Miami will have four pairs of Hurricanes in main draw doubles at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships, which begins play on Friday.
No. 48 Lomacki and Andrews pair up to face Daniel Yun and Andrew Li of Georgia Tech while Langmo and Flores will take on Andrei Morin-Kougoucheff and Anthony Schohn of FAU. Also in the Round of 64, Clark and Genovese will battle Zackery Kennedy and Sebastian Acuna of Georgia State as Kevin Bondar and Tefel are playing against Sam Philp and Anderson Scarpa of Mercer.
