Andrews Wins at ITA All-American Championship

TULSA, Okla. – University of Miami junior Max Andrews earned a three-set win on Saturday to move on to the Round of 128 in the 2015 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men’s All-American Championships held in Tulsa, Okla.

Andrews, seeded in the 9-16 group of the pre-qualifier, took down Bryan Adams from Bucknell, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 to earn a spot in Sunday’s Round of 128. Andrews, from Manchester, England, will face Nathan Roper (Oklahoma State) at 11 a.m. Saturday.

“Max was able to hang tough mentally and pull out a good win in a match that had a lot of momentum changes,” assistant coach Mark Dickson said. “He is really hungry to compete at a high level and his resilience after losing the second set today will help him in his next match.”

Also playing in Saturday’s pre-qualifier, junior Jesse Flores faced Grey Hamilton of Mississippi in the Round of 256. Flores opened with a loss in the first set, but came back to win the second in a tiebreaker, but came up short in the end, 6-3, 6-7(3), 6-4. At 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Flores will battle Fedor Baev (Northwestern) in the consolation pre-qualifying bracket.

“Jesse saved several match points today and did a great job of adjusting his strategy to win the second set and have a break of serve in the third set,” Dickson said. “Unfortunately, he wasn’t quite able to finish as strong as he would have liked, but he gave himself a chance to win and learned more about staying aggressive to close out matches. These long, competitive matches are what he needs and tomorrow will be another good opportunity for him against a tough opponent.”

Pre-qualifying matches continue on Sunday, Oct. 4, with qualifying matches starting on Oct. 5 and main draw contests getting underway on Oct. 8. The singles and doubles finals are scheduled for Oct. 12.

Sophomore Christian Langmo is participating in the singles qualifier bracket on Monday. Sophomore No. 45 Piotr Lomacki will compete in the main draw singles event, beginning Thursday, and will pair up with Andrews in the doubles qualifier draw which begins Monday.

This marks the 11th straight year that the University of Tulsa will serve as the official tournament host, and most of the action during the two-week event will take place on the courts of the Michael D.
