Tefel & Bondar: Doubles Finals at Bedford Cup
FT. MYERS, Fla. – In a day that saw the University of Miami play in 15 tennis matches, Bernard Tefel and Kevin Bondar prevailed in doubles, winning their way into the finals of Flight 2 at the Bedford Cup, State of Florida Championships in Ft. Myers, Fla.
After a weather delay cancelled doubles play on Friday, Tefel and Bondar battled through a trio of matches on Saturday to earn a place in Sunday’s final match. The pair opened day two with a tough match against FAMU’s Karlyn Small and Carlos Waitman, as the Canes won the tiebraker, 8-7 (7-3). Miami cruised through the quarterfinals with an 8-1 win over Sam Chaffin and Ricky Ventura from host school, Florida Gulf Coast. Tefel and Bondar won the semifinals over Laurynas Antropikas and Simon Julin of Stetson, 8-4, earning a chance to play on Sunday.
The pair were also busy playing singles matches on Saturday. Tefel opened the day with a 6-2, 7-6 win over Sam Chaffin (FGCU), then fell to FAU’s Alexander Schohn, 7-5, 7-6 (0-5) in the quarterfinals of singles Flight 2. Bondar faced Lucas Vaz of FGCU, but came up short, 6-3, 7-5, in the consolation quarterfinal match.
Sophomore Nile Clark also earned a pair of singles wins on Saturday. In the round of 16, he downed Alberto De Meo (North Florida) in three sets, 7-6, 6-3, 6-4, then in the north quarterfinals, he took care of Tyler Pate of UCF, 6-5, 6-5.
Junior Jesse Flores was 1-1 in singles for the day, earning a three-set win in the consolation bracket, then falling in three sets in the quarterfinals. After a slow start, Flores caught fire and downed Jack Thiessen of UCF, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2, then was upended, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, by Stetson’s Simon Julin.
In doubles, Clark and Flores lost their Round of 16 match to Chase Perez-Blanco/Josh Wardell (Florida), 8-2, but rebounded with a win in the consolation quarterfinals, defeating Loic Blanco/Coilin MacNamara (Stetson), 8-4.
Sophomore Niclas Genovese played in the consolation round of singles Flight 1, coming up short to Alexander Gitin (Florida Atlantic), 6-4, 6-1.
Miami continues play in the Bedford Cup Sunday morning, and the complete schedule will be released at a later time.
