@CanesFutbol Captain's Corner: Aug. 12, 2015

CORAL GABLES, Fla. The captains of the University of Miami soccer team for the 2015 season are writing a blog for HurricaneSports.com this year called Captain’s Corner, with Shannon McCarthy providing the opening entries this offseason.

Wednesday, in her fifth post for the blog, McCarthy shares how hard the team has been training and touches on the Hurricanes’ upcoming exhibition match at FIU Thursday . . .

Welcome back to the Captain’s Corner, Canes fans! We have made great strides as a team during the first week of preseason. I am so proud of the girls for bringing high intensity to every training session, taking care of their bodies and performing at an elite level. The blazing heat has been with us every step of the way, but it makes us stronger and gives us the edge over our opponent.

For the past week, we’ve trained twice a day. We take the field first thing in the morning and then come back in the afternoon again. With our first exhibition game tomorrow, Coach Monroe has only trained us once the past two days. We are SO excited to take the field against FIU tomorrow.

All the fitness tests, meetings and training sessions have prepared us well for our game tomorrow. It is an exhibition game, which means it will not count toward our regular season record. Although it doesn’t count, our team will approach this game with the mindset to execute the game plan and get a winning result. We will travel and play Stetson Sunday with the same mindset.

This team is connected and devoted to the goals we are trying to accomplish. Everyone accepts and understands the standards of the team. Because all the girls are on the same page with the culture of the team, it makes leading much easier. I am so grateful to be a part of this competitive environment.

In this program, as a captain, I have the privilege to be a part of the conversation with our coaching staff when it comes to molding our culture. We have all worked so hard to be on the same page as a team in doing this. We were so honored that the coaching staff brought in a “leadership specialist” named Jeff Janssen who worked with us the past two days on creating our own “Championship Culture.”

He ran a two-day workshop with us that was incredibly beneficial. What we learned from him will not only help us tremendously on the field, but off the field in life as well. In this leadership environment, we learned so much about each other and what will help to make us successful moving forward. This was just one step in what we want to accomplish as our team goals. We hope you all support us in our mission!

I look forward to a captain sharing the results of our games with you next week! Thanks again for reading and, as always, GO CANES!
