Cohen Coaches Freedoms into Playoffs

Former University of Miami men’s tennis All-American Josh Cohen led his Philadelphia Freedoms team to the Mylan World TeamTennis Eastern Conference Championship match this season, in his fourth year as the head coach.

The Freedoms fell, 25-9, in the Eastern Conference Championship to the Washington Kastles, the eventual Mylan WTT Champions. Billie Jean King (pictured right with Cohen) is the co-founder of World TeamTennis.

Cohen, a Philadelphia-area native, began as an assistant coach in 2010 and 2011, then was promoted to head coach for the Freedoms in 2012. Prior to the playing and coaching career with the Freedoms, he was an assistant coach with the University of Pennsylvania, and in 2008, he played for the Delaware Smash of the Mylan WTT.

Cohen was a decorated college and junior player prior to joining the Freedoms.  He finished his career at the University of Miami as the program’s all-time leader in wins. By the end of his senior season, Cohen was ranked No. 18 in the nation for singles play and No. 3 in doubles. He was a first-team All-ACC and Big East selection and also earned first-team All-America status. While playing in USTA Juniors Cohen ranked No. 1 nationally, won the U.S. Men’s Open National Championship and played on the World Championship Sunshine Cup Team.
