@CanesMensTennis Falls 4-3 to No. 64 Clemson

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Miami Hurricanes men’s tennis team fell 4-3 in a hard fought dual match to No. 64 Clemson Friday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Coral Gables, Fla.

“Unfortunately we were not able to get the doubles point and it proved to be very valuable in the match today,” said head coach Mario Rincon. “Clemson is a good ACC team and in a couple of spots, we did not compete well enough.”

The day’s action began with doubles play. The Canes came out strong in the third position, where Bernard Tefel and Christian Langmo defeated Austin Ansari and Hampton Drake, 8-3. Senior Wilfredo Gonzalez and Kevin Bondar were unable to develop a consistent rhythm in the two spot and fell to Luke Johnson and Robert Dudley, 8-4.

Clemson clinched the doubles point after the freshman duo of Nile Clark and Piotr Lomacki fell in a tiebreak against Hunter Harrington and Alejandro Augusto, 8-7(5), in the top doubles matchup.

In singles action, No. 74 Lomacki, playing in the top spot, battled in a difficult match and came out on top after two tiebreaks against No. 91 Hunter Harrington, 7-6(5), 7-6(5). Fellow freshman Langmo was also tied up in a tight match and defeated his opponent Alejandro Augusto in a three-set thriller, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, at the second position.

“It was very positive to win at No. 1 and No. 2 with freshmen in the line-up,” added Rincon.

Playing in the No. 3 slot, senior Gonzalez imposed himself in the second set after a tough first set and won his match against Daffra Sanon, 7-5, 6-2.

Andrew Harrington fell in a tough match against Luke Johnson, 6-0, 6-1 and fellow freshman Clark also had a hard time against Austin Ansari, falling 6-4, 6-0.

The Tigers clinched the match at the sixth spot where Niclas Genovese fell in a tough three-set match, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1.

“We did not play well enough to win today,” said Rincon. “I think that we have to play better doubles and we have to be a lot more solid at the bottom of the lineup.”

The Canes will be back at home in a week to host two ACC opponents, No. 36 Notre Dame on Friday, March 27 at 2 p.m. and Boston College on Sunday, March 29 at 12 p.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. Attendance is free to the matches.
