@CanesMensTennis Falls, 6-1, to No. 6 Duke
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Miami Hurricanes men’s tennis team fell in a tough dual match to No. 6 Duke 6-1 Sunday afternoon at the Ambler Tennis Stadium in Durham, NC.
“We played better today,” said head coach Mario Rincon. “Duke is a tough team. Nile Clark stood out today winning his singles in a convincing manner and being up 7-2, and match point at number one doubles with Piotr.”
The day’s action began with doubles play. Sophmore Bernard Tefel teamed up with freshman Andrew Harrington and fell against Raphael Hemmeler and TJ Pura, 8-3. Senior Wilfredo Gonzalez and Kevin Bondar could not develop a rhythm and fell to Bruno Semenzato and Chris Mengel, 8-3, to secure the doubles point for the Blue Devils.
The freshmen duo of Nile Clark and Piotr Lomacki were dominating up 7-2 when play was called.
In singles action, freshman Clark came away with a dominant win against Josh Levine, 6-3, 6-0. Fellow freshman Alexander Fahnehjelm was overpowered against TJ Pura and fell, 6-1, 6-2.
At the second position, freshman Christian Langmo fell in a tough match to Raphael Hemmeler, 6-3, 6-3, which clinched the victory for the Blue Devils.
No. 74 Lomacki battled in a three-set epic but fell to No. 34 Jason Tahir, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(1). Freshman Niclas Genovese fought hard in the first set but did not have enough against Chris Mengel and fell, 6-4, 6-1.
Senior Gonzalez fell in a brutal match against Bruno Semenzato, which included two tiebreaks, 7-6(3), 7-6(5).
The Canes will return to action on Friday, March 20 at 3 p.m., when they host No. 62 Clemson at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
