@CanesMensTennis Falls to No. 12 UNC
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team was overpowered by No. 12 North Carolina 7-0 Friday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C.
“We were outplayed by UNC today,” said head coach Mario Rincon. “We got overpowered indoors. They’re a strong team, but I know we can play much better.”
The dual match began with doubles play. The freshmen duo of Nile Clark and Alexander Fahnehjelm were unable to develop a rhythm and fell to Brett Clark and Robert Kelly, 8-2. Senior Wilfredo Gonzalez and freshman Kevin Bondar fell to Jack Murray and Ronnie Schneider, 8-4, which secured the doubles point for the Tar Heels.
Senior Henrique Tsukamoto and freshman Piotr Lomacki were down 6-5 in a tight match against No. 22 Esben Hess-Olesen and Oystein Steiro when play was called.
Singles play began after a short rain delay, where play was moved indoors. Freshman Bondar fell in a tough match to Stuart De Paolo, 6-1, 6-1. Lone sophomore Bernard Tefel also could not develop a rhythm against No. 86 Robert Kelly falling, 6-1, 6-2. The match was secured for the Tar Heels after senior Tsukamoto fell in a hard fought match against Oystein Steiro, 6-4, 6-2.
At the top singles spot, No. 74 Lomacki battled in a tough match against No. 24 Ronnie Schneider but fell, 6-4, 6-0. Senior Gonzalez fell in a competitive match to No. 116 Jack Murray, 6-4, 6-0.
At the No. 2 singles spot, freshman Christian Langmo pushed his opponent to the limit, but did not have enough, falling to #57 Brett Clark, 6-3, 7-6(7).
“Christian Langmo had a big lead, and wasn’t able to close the second set, but he played at a high level, and I know that in the future he will do great things for the Canes,” said head coach Rincon.
The Canes will return to action on Sunday, March 15 at 12 p.m., when they face No. 2 Duke in Durham, N.C.
