Albuquerque to be Honored During FSU Game
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami women’s tennis standout Monique Albuquerque will be recognized during tonight’s 9:00 p.m. men’s basketball game against Florida State at the BankUnited Center.
A graduate student from Porto Alegre, Brazil, Albuquerque was recently tabbed as one of 53 student-athletes across all sports in the Atlantic Coast Conference selected for a postgraduate scholarship honor.
“It is a great feeling to receive such an important award. All the time and work I have put into academics and athletics was definitely worth it,” Albuquerque said. “I’m thankful for all the support Paige [Yaroshuk-Tews] and Lau [Vallverdu] have given me over there years. Being a part of this team definitely pushes you to be the best you can be, not only as an athlete and student, but as a person.”
An integral part of Miami’s 2014 ACC regular season co-championship and 2013 ACC Tournament championship, Albuquerque has posted a doubles record of 44-10 in her Hurricane career, including 20-6 at the No. 1 spot. She is 40-14 in spring singles play and was a perfect 14-0 in ACC matches during the 2014 season.
Off the court, Albuquerque graduated Magna Cum Laude with a 3.869 GPA in May 2014 and was a member of the Dean’s List (3.5 GPA) in all five of her undergraduate semesters at Miami, making the President’s Honor Roll (4.0 GPA) in two of them.
A two-time ACC Honor Roll student and recipient of the 1A FAR Academic Excellence Award, Albuquerque is currently pursuing a Master of Science in International Business.
“Monique is a great example of what a true student-athlete represents,” head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “She is hard-working both on and off the court and has very high expectations regarding academics.”
Albuquerque is one of four Hurricanes who received the award, along with football’s Nantambu-Akil Fentress, track & field’s Lea Johnson and volleyball’s Savanah Leaf. The quartet will be recognized during the under-eight minute media timeout of the first half at this evening’s game.
All 53 of the recipients will be honored Wednesday, April 15 at the annual Cone Health ACC Postgraduate Luncheon in Greensboro, N.C.
Albuquerque and the 20th-ranked Hurricanes return to the court Friday, Feb. 27 at 4:00 p.m. to open up ACC play against No. 53 Wake Forest at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
