@HurricaneTennis Set to Begin ACC Play
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Atlantic Coast Conference play is just two days away for the University of Miami women’s tennis team.
The Hurricanes, ranked No. 20 in the country, will play their first two ACC matches of the season at home at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. Miami (4-2) will first meet No. 53 Wake Forest Friday, Feb. 27 at 4:00 p.m. and then take on No. 14 Clemson Sunday, March 1 at 11:00 a.m.
Coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews’ team does still have one nonconference match on its schedule, but will play five ACC matches beforehand.
Miami has performed quite well of late against Wake Forest, defeating the Demon Deacons 6-1 on the road last season and winning 7-0 in 2013, the last meeting between the teams in Coral Gables, Fla.
Wake Forest (9-3, 0-1 ACC) is led by sophomore Kimmy Guerin, ranked No. 100 in the nation in singles. The Demon Deacons began their ACC slate with a 6-1 home loss to Clemson Sunday, Feb. 22.
Clemson (6-4, 2-0 ACC) has already played two conference matches, as the Tigers won at home against Virginia Tech 5-2 Friday, Feb. 20 before defeating Wake Forest.
One of four ACC teams in the ITA’s top 20, Clemson has four ranked singles players, headlined by junior Joana Eidukonyte at No. 20. The Tigers also have the top-ranked doubles pair in the country in seniors Beatrice Gumulya and Jessy Rompies.
Miami won 4-3 at Clemson last season and also defeated the Tigers 4-3 in the last meeting in Coral Gables, Fla. back in 2013.
The Hurricanes feature five ranked singles player, including two in the top 50. Junior Stephanie Wagner is No. 10, while freshman Sinead Lohan is No. 45.
Miami also has two ranked doubles pairs, with Wagner and junior Lina Lileikite ranked seventh and the duo of senior Monique Albuquerque and junior Clementina Riobueno at No. 17.
