Gonzalez Defeats No. 56 in Florida Invite

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Miami senior Wilfredo Gonzalez defeated the No. 56 ranked player in three sets in the last day of the Florida Invitational at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex hosted by the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla. 

Gonzalez, a native of Guatemala City, Guatemala, was put up against tough competition in singles action in the third day of play in Gainesville, facing No. 56 George Goldhoff from Texas. After losing the first set, Gonzalez came back with a vengeance, winning the battle, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Six other Canes also competed in singles action. Fellow senior Henrique Tsukamoto faced No. 31 Lloyd Glasspool from Texas and fell, 6-0, 6-1. Freshman Kevin Bondar played a solid and consistent match against Richard Brej from Florida, winning in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Lone sophomore Bernard Tefel faced No. 106 ranked Adrien Berkowicz from Texas and could not get into a groove falling, 6-3, 6-2. Freshman Christian Langmo also faced a ranked opponent in No. 113 Nick Naumann from Texas and fell, 6-0, 6-4. Fellow freshman Nile Clark rounded out the action in singles for the Canes, and battled onto a three-set victory against William Jou from Texas, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4.

The Canes then teamed up in doubles action. The duo of Gonzalez and Langmo battled against the No. 42 ranked team of Gordon Watson and Diego Hidalgo from Florida, but could not close out falling, 8-6. Tsukamoto and Clark then teamed up and faced Chase Perez-Blanco and Richard Brej from Florida but fell, 8-4. Then sophomore Tefel and freshman Harrington competed against Josh Wardell and Oliver Landert from Florida but could not develop a rhythm falling, 8-2.

The final day of the Florida Invitational concludes the fall season for the Canes. Make sure to mark your calendars, as the Hurricanes will be back in action in January to open the spring season when they host Florida Atlantic on Jan. 18 and UCF on Jan. 19.
