Canes Advance to Quarterfinals of Regionals

ATHENS, Ga. – University of Miami freshman Piotr Lomacki advanced to the main draw quarterfinals and senior Henrique Tsukamoto advanced to the quarterfinals of the singles consolation in the third day of action at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships today hosted by the University of Georgia at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex

Lomacki continued his impressive run as the No. 9-16 seed by winning two matches in today’s action of the main draw. In his first match, Lomacki dispatched his competitor Lasse Muscheites from UNF in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. In his second match, Lomacki faced the No. 4 seed Ben Wagland, who is ranked No.50 nationally, from host Georgia. Lomacki lost the first set in a tiebreak, dominated in the second, and imposed his style of play in the third to win the match, 6-7(4), 6-1, 6-3. He will now face No. 9-16 seed Maxx Lipman from Florida in the quarterfinals of the main draw at 10 a.m. at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

Senior Tsukamoto also had to win two matches to advance to the quarterfinals of the singles consolation draw. In his first match, he faced Tianyu Bao from Florida Gulf Coast. Tsukamoto won the match in three sets, winning the first set, falling in the second, but then came back to win the third, to win the match, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0(4). In his second match, Tsukamoto faced Julian Bradley from UNF and won in straight sets with two tiebreaks, 7-6(3), 7-6(4). Tsukamoto will now play against Chris Barrus from UCF in the quarterfinals of the singles consolation draw at 10 a.m.

In other singles consolation draw action, fellow senior Wilfredo Gonzalez faced Eduardo Segura from Georgia Tech and fell in straight sets in a tough match by a score of 7-6(4), 7-5. The lone sophomore from the Hurricanes in the tournament, Bernard Tefel, faced Ingancio Ganzalez-Muniz from USF pushing the match to three sets. Tefel could not close out in the first set, came back in the second, and was unable to finish in the third, falling 4-6, 6-1, 1-0(8).

Freshmen Andrew Harrington and Christian Langmo also took part in today’s consolation singles draw action. Harrington faced Oliver Snaider from Mercer and fell in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5. Langmo went to three sets against his competitor Michael Kay from Georgia Tech, but could not close out falling, 6-7(3), 6-3, 1-0(6).
