Lomacki Advances in USTA/ITA Regionals
ATHENS, Ga. – University of Miami freshman Piotr Lomacki won his first round match and highlighted the second day for the Hurricanes at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships today, hosted by the University of Georgia at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Lomacki entered the day as the No. 9-16 seed and faced Inaki Espindola from UCF. Espindola started strong and beat Lomacki in the first, Lomacki then came back with a vengeance in the second and the third to finish the match, ultimately winning, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. He will now face Lasse Muscheites from UNF tomorrow at 11 a.m. at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex
In other singles action, his teammate and freshman Christian Langmo, a native of Boca Raton, Fla., lost in heart wrenching fashion in two straight tiebreaks to Sam Pritchard from Kennesaw State, 7-6(3), 7-6(3). Langmo will now play in the singles consolation bracket tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. against Michael Kay from Georgia Tech. Fellow freshman Andrew Harrington, who had to win two matches yesterday to qualify to main draw, faced the tough task of playing against No. 9-16 seed No. 100 Maxx Lipman from Florida. Harrington challenged Lippman in both sets but was unable to pull out the victory losing, 7-5, 7-5. He will now face Oliver Snaider from Mercer in the singles consolation bracket at 1 p.m.
Senior Henrique Tsukamoto faced the tough task against No. 3 seed No. 19 Roberto Cid from USF. Tsukamoto ultimately was unable to develop a rhythm and fell in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. He will now play against Tianyu Bao from Florida Gulf Coast at 2:30 p.m. in consolation bracket action. Fellow senior Wilfredo Gonzalez played against Peter Bertran from host Georgia. Gonzalez pushed Bertran to the limit but could not close out losing in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5. Gonzalez will now face Eduardo Segura from Georgia Tech, play will begin at 2 p.m.
Teammate Bernard Tefel, the lone sophomore for the Canes at the Championships, Tefel faced the No. 9-16 seed Jack Findel-Hawkins from UNF. Tefel lost the first set and attempted a strong comeback in the second, but was unable to close out, losing the match, 6-3, 7-5. He will now face Ignacio Gonzalez-Muniz from South Florida at 12:30 p.m.
In doubles action, the freshmen duo of Fahnehjelm and Harrington played the twin tandem of Arnav and Arsav Mohanty from Mercer. The duo battled hard but ultimately came up short falling, 8-4. Fellow freshman Nile Clark teamed up with Tsukamoto and faced the No. 5-8 seed duo of No. 26 Paul Oosterbaan and Ben Wagland from host Gerogia and could not close out, and ultimately fell, 8-5. In the third doubles match-up, Langmo and Tefel teamed up facing the No. 5-8 seed duo of No. 42 Diego Hidalgo and Gordon Watson from Florida. Langmo and Tefel came up short and fell, 8-3.
In qualifying singles action, freshman Alexander Fahnehjelm battled against Andy Martinez from host Georgia in three sets ultimately falling, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0(5).
