Canes Tally Five Wins At USTA/ITA Regionals

ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team finished the first day of the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships with three singles and two doubles victories today at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

Three freshmen were in action in the qualifying singles draw. Freshman Andrew Harrington, a native of Severna Park, Md., won his two matches to qualify for the main draw. In his first match, he was challenged in the first set, but he pulled away in the second against Richard Brej from Florida, winning the match, 6-3, 6-1. In his second match, Harrington imposed his style of play against David Durham from Kennesaw State, and won 6-2, 6-2. Harrington will join six Canes in main draw singles action tomorrow where he will have the tough task of playing against the No. 9-16 seed Maxx Lipman from Florida.

His teammate Nile Clark won his first match 6-3, 6-3, against Jorge Wilton from Kennesaw State. In his second match of the day, he was forced into a tiebreak in the first set, and was unable to come back in the second against Arnav Mohanty from Mercer, falling 7-6(3), 7-5.

Also a freshman, Alexander Fahnehjelm a native of Stockholm, Sweden, was forced into a tiebreak and was also unable to come back in the second against Sam Philp from Mercer, falling 7-6(6), 6-3. He will now play in the singles consolation draw tomorrow evening against Gonzalo Arroyo Baudet from Stetson at 5:30 p.m.

In doubles action, the Canes found success, winning two of three matches. In the first match, the freshman duo of Harrington and Fahnehjelm won their match in dominant fashion, 8-3, against Andres Alfonzo and Ricky Ventura from Florida Gulf Coast. They will now face the twin tandem of Arsav and Arnav Mohanty early tomorrow at 9 a.m.

Clark teamed up with senior Henrique Tsukamoto to defeat the Anderson Scarpa and Oliver Snaider duo from Mercer, 8-5. They will now play the No. 5-8 seeded team of Paul Oosterbaan and Ben Wagland from host Georgia.

In the third match, freshman Piotr Lomacki and senior Wilfredo Gonzalez teamed up, losing in a tough match-up against Ignacio Gonzalez-Muniz and Vadym Kalyuzhnyy, 8-2.
