Soccer Falls to No. 2 Seminoles 3-0
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami dropped a hard-fought game at Cobb Stadium to the second-ranked Florida State Seminoles Saturday night, falling to the visitors 3-0 at Cobb Stadium.
Miami’s defense held stout though the first 65 minutes against the top-ranked Seminoles offensive attack, with keeper Emily Lilard coming up with four saves during the first period and seven total saves throughout the match.
“The team came out invested in the game,” head coach Mary-Frances Monroe said. “We committed ourselves to pressuring hard and trying to double team when we could, as well as being organized behind the ball and patient.”
Florida State’s first goal came in the 65th minute off a free kick from 22 yards out.
Isabella Schmid curled a shot into the top-left corner, beating Lillard and giving the Seminoles a 1-0 lead.
“It deflated us a little bit getting scored on off of a free kick, because up until that point they executed the game plan and committed themselves to doing all of the little things right,” Monroe said about the Cane’s defensive performance.
Despite the late goal, Monroe was impressed with Miami’s execution of the team’s gameplan throughout the match.
“We followed the game plan and started to connect passes more in this game than in the past,” Monroe said afterwards.
Two goals from FSU’s talented forward Berglind Thorvaldsdottir in the last 25 minutes sealed the win for Florida State.
Miami returns to Cobb Stadium Thursday evening to take on Virginia Tech. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
