@CanesMensTennis Triumphs at Olympia Fields

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – In the last day of action at the Olympia Fields Country Club/Fighting Illini Invitational in Olympia Fields, Ill., the University of Miami men’s tennis team finished successfully with three straight-set singles victories.

The first victory came from senior Wilfredo Gonzalez, a native of Guatemala City, Guatemala, who dominated in his match against Kenny Sabacinski from Notre Dame in a 6-2, 6-0 straight-set win.

Teammate freshman Piotr Lomacki was challenged in his first set, but then imposed his style of play in the second to win against Nick Horton from NC State, 7-5, 6-2, in another straight-set victory for the Hurricanes.

Sophomore Bernard Tefel, a local native from Miami, Fla., gave the Canes the third straight-set victory of the day. Tefel was pushed to the limit in the first set and was challenged in the second, but was able to persevere against Wyatt McCoy from Notre Dame in a 7-5, 6-4 victory.

Freshman Christian Langmo faced a tough challenge and lost in his last match of the tournament against Ryan Peniston from Memphis, 6-4, 6-1.

In doubles play, the pair of Gonzalez and Lomacki fought hard but lost in an extended tiebreak against the Thomas Weigel and Nick Horton pair from NC State, 8-7 (5). The duo of Langmo and Tefel also faced a tough challenge, but lost, 8-2, against the Drew Dawson and Quentin Monaghan pair from Notre Dame.
