@CanesMensTennis At Bedford Cup: Day Two
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – In its second day of the Bedford Cup – State of Florida Championship at the UNF Tennis Complex, the University of Miami men’s tennis team finished with two singles victories and one doubles victory in quarterfinals action.
“Our guys played tough and had another solid day on the courts,” said assistant coach Mark Dickson. “Nile is playing very aggressive tennis and dictating play. His confidence is growing with every match. Bernard hustled after every ball, raised his level when he had to and won a long match. I was really proud of how everyone competed and look forward to seeing them finish strong tomorrow.”
In his second career singles match, freshman Nile Clark won and advanced to the semifinals of the White Flight Bracket. Clark was challenged in the first set, but ultimately dominated in the second set to secure the 7-5, 6-0 victory against Reece Acree from UCF.
Also in the White Flight bracket, freshman Andrew Harrington lost in a three-set match. After losing the first set, Harrington fought back and won the second set, but came up short in the third against Karlyn Small from Florida A&M, 2-6, 6-3, 2-6.
Clark will now play in the White Flight semifinals and will face Chris Perrigan from Florida Gulf Coast. The match will begin tomorrow at 9 a.m. Andrew Harrington will play Diego Garavito from Bethune-Cookman at 10:30 a.m. in the White Flight Quarterfinalists bracket.
Sophomores Bernard Tefel and Daniel Shebshayevich played in the Navy Flight Consolation bracket quarterfinals. Tefel dispatched his competitor Chris Barrus from UCF in a three set epic, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Shebshayevich, a local Aventura, Fla., native faced Alexader Chepik from Bethune-Cookman but ultimately lost in straight sets, 2-6, 2-6.
Tefel will now play in the Navy Flight Consolation bracket semifinals and will face Courage Okungbowa from Florida A&M. Play will begin tomorrow at 9 a.m. Shebshayevich will face Laurynas Antropikas from Stetson tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. in the Navy Flight round three bracket.
In doubles action the No. 8 seeded Tefel/Shebshayevich duo forfeited against the No.1 seeded Gozun/Cid team from USF.
In the Doubles Consolation Bracket the freshman team of Clark/Harrington defeated Belga/Brej from Florida in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 giving them their first doubles victory of their collegiate careers. This victory puts the duo into the semifinals of the Doubles Consolation Bracket.
The Clark/Harrington duo will play the Barrus/Espindola team from UCF. The match will begin tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
