Riobueno Crowned Summer Circuit Doubles Champ
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Miami Hurricanes women’s tennis player Clementina Riobueno finished off a successful weekend at the ITA Summer Circuit tournament in Tuscaloosa, Ala., this past weekend.
Riobueno, a rising junior, partnered with Alabama’s Luicelena Perez to win the doubles championship. As the top seed in the tournament, Riobueno and Perez opened with a first round bye before stringing together four wins to take the doubles crown. Playing in the final against the No. 2 seed in the tournament Jansen and Greene, Riobueno and Perez put together an 8-2 win to finish off their perfect weekend.
On the singles side, Riobueno entered the tournament as the fourth overall seed, earning an automatic spot in the second round, where she defeated Gabrielle Gerlach in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. In her second match of the tournament, the Barquisimeto, Venezuela native cruised past Emily Newton 6-2, 6-0.
Less than a half hour later in the quarterfinals, Riobueno came away with a 6-2, 6-1 win against six-seed Laura Patterson, an incoming freshman at Georgia. In Monday’s semifinal match, Riobueno was bested by Perez, her doubles running mate. After taking the opening set 7-5, Perez, a junior and also a native of Venezuela, bounced back in the second frame with a 6-2 win. In the 10-point superset tiebreaker with a trip to the finals on the line, Perez came away with a 10-6 advantage to clinch the win.
