Wagner Wins Bavarian Tennis Championship
SCHANZL, Germany—Rising women’s tennis junior Stephanie Wagner defeated the world’s 372nd-ranked player Laura-Ioana Andrei to win the Bavarian Championship on Sunday.
Wagner and Andrei, both members of TC Amberg, dueled it out in the final for more than two and a half hours before the Hurricanes’ top singles player prevailed 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
“The final match was very difficult because I was down in the majority of it,” Wagner said. “Thankfully, I was able to get back into the match and turn it around in the third set.”
After splitting the first two sets, Andrei – of Romanian descent – took a 3-1 lead in the third frame, but Wagner battled back to win five of the next six games to seal the win.
Wagner entered the tournament unseeded, but did win the championship a year ago. The Amberg native defeated Sonjoa Larsen in the semifinals 6-1, 7-5 before winning the final the next day.
“It felt great to win the tournament,” Wagner said. Especially because I came into it unseeded and had to take down some highly ranked players to come away with the win.”
