Dailey-Harris, @MiamiTrack Finish at NCAAs
EUGENE, Ore. – Dakota Dailey-Harris was the final of the University of Miami track and field program’s 10 student-athletes to compete at the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Dailey-Harris was one of 24 competitors in the women’s high jump. The sophomore cleared the opening height of 1.72m on her second attempt, but was unable to clear the next mark of 1.77m. Dailey-Harris finished tied for 19th in her first trip to the NCAA Championships.
“We want to be better than we are,” Miami director of track and field/cross country Amy Deem said. “I think that is the good thing we will take away from this week. We’re headed in the right direction and of the 10 girls that came, nine will be back. We’ve got some great people coming in next year, too. I am very excited about where we are, but you always want to do better and you’re never satisfied.”
The Hurricanes competed in the 100m, 400m, 800m, pole vault, high jump, discus, hammer throw and the 4x400m relay at the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 11-14 in Eugene, Oregon.
Lea Johnson was the first Hurricane to compete at the 2014 NCAA Championships. The junior finished eighth in Flight 1 and 16th overall in the women’s hammer throw with a mark of 59.90m. Miami also had three competitors in the running events on the opening day of the NCAA Championships. Shakima Wimbley placed fourth in Heat 1 of the women’s 400m semifinal with a time of 52.61 seconds, while Thandi Stewart posted a time of 2:06.72 in Heat 2 of the women’s 800m semifinal. Alyssa McClure was the final Hurricane in action Wednesday, competing in the women’s 100m semifinal. The senior posted a time of 11.62 seconds to close out her career.
Day 2 saw five Canes in action, the most of any day at the 2014 NCAA Championships. Junior thrower Amber Monroe posted a mark of 48.93m that was ninth in Flight 1 and 17th overall in the women’s discus.
Shakima Wimbley, Taneisha Cordell, Jamika Glades and Anthonia Moore combined to run the 4x400m relay in 3:38.02. The quartet placed eighth in Heat 1 and 21st overall in the semifinal round.
Friday was all about Alysha Newman as she earned Miami’s first points of the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Championships. The sophomore picked up two points for the Hurricanes, placing seventh in the women’s pole vault with a mark of 4.15m.
Dailey-Harris wrapped up the Hurricanes’ trip to the NCAA Championships with her performance in the women’s high jump. The sophomore’s season was filled with success, most notably her personal-best mark of 1.80m set at the LSU Invitational. The mark ranks second in school history and secured Dailey-Harris’ spot in the NCAA East Preliminary.
As a team, Miami scored two points at the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Championships, finishing tied for 54th.
