No. 12 WTen Opens NCAA Play Against Boston U
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The 12th-ranked Miami Hurricanes women’s tennis team opens up postseason play against Boston University in the NCAA First Round on Friday at 2 p.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
Miami (19-5) qualified for the NCAA tournament for the 19th straight time and will be hosting the first and second rounds for the 10th consecutive year.
The Hurricanes will play their first round match against the Boston Terriers, who finished the 2013-14 season 14-6 overall and champions of the Patriot League.
Also coming to Coral Gables for the regional are No. 18 Oklahoma and No. 55 Wichita State. The Sooners, who fell to Texas Tech in the Big 12 Championship, are 16-6 overall this spring. The Shockers come to Coral Gables with a 16-6 record and as winners of the Missouri Valley Conference.
First and second round competition features four teams playing in a single-elimination format. The winner of each site advances to the national tournament in Athens, Georgia, where the 16 teams will compete for the national championship on May 15-20.
Head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews has now reached the NCAA tournament in each of her 13 seasons at the helm of the program in Coral Gables, leading the Hurricanes to the Sweet Sixteen in the previous eight seasons. More impressively, Miami is the only program in the country to have advanced to the Elite Eight in each of the last five seasons.
Singles player Stephanie Wagner and the doubles pair Monique Albuquerque and Clementina Riobueno were also selected to compete in the individual portion of the 2014 NCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Championship.
Ranked 29th in the ITA singles rankings, Wagner was one of 49 at-large selections into the 64-player tournament. The sophomore from Amberg, Germany, was named to the All-ACC First Team after posting an overall record of 20-4 and 12-2 in ACC play. With an 18-4 record in dual matches, Wagner has topped five ranked opponents this spring.
Ranked eighth in the ITA doubles poll, Albuquerque and Riobueno were one of 22 doubles teams to receive an at-large selection to the 32-team tournament. As Miami’s top doubles duo, the pair finished the regular season with a 19-2 overall record and 10-1 mark in ACC play. On the year, they have beaten five nationally-ranked opponents and have currently won nine of their last 10.
The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 21-26 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia, following the conclusion of the team championship, which runs from May 15-20.
